About KayaFees
KayaFees helps parents at fee-charging public schools check whether they qualify for an exemption from school fees, using the official formula and table. It is part of KayaWise.
Why "KayaFees"?
"Kaya" is South African slang for home. School fees are one of the biggest bills in many homes, and the law gives parents who can't afford them a right to apply for relief. Few parents know how the calculation works, so we show it.
Where our rules come from
- Regulations relating to the exemption of parents from payment of school fees in public schools, GN R1052 of 18 October 2006 (Government Gazette 29311), with the table substituted by GN 1149 of 17 November 2006.
- Sections 39 to 41 of the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996, as amended by the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act 32 of 2024.
- The Amended National Norms and Standards for School Funding, GN 7160 of 20 February 2026, for no-fee schools.
- Every rule in our code records its source link and the date we checked it, and each page shows those sources.
- Last full review: 30 October 2026.
What we are not
We are not a government website, we are not your school, and we do not give legal advice. Only the school governing body decides on an exemption, and you can appeal to the provincial Head of Department.
How the site is funded
The site is free and shows clearly labelled display advertising. We do not use affiliate or referral links, and adverts never change a result.
